The Most Luxurious Spa Treatments… From Things We Might Even Throw Away

One afternoon at Mahai, a group of women gathered for a workshop led by Gabriela, who teaches herbal wisdom workshops and does a wonderful natural skincare and plant-based beauty session. I expected a pleasant afternoon learning a few homemade recipes. What I experienced instead was a subtle shift in how I think about consumption.

The ingredients before us looked almost ordinary: coffee grounds, flax seeds, aloe vera, oils, herbs. Many of these are things we use every day in the kitchen—and often throw away without a second thought.

Gabylu began showing us how to transform these simple ingredients into incredible skincare products. Coffee grounds became a luxurious exfoliating body scrub. Flax seeds turned into a smooth hair gel. Fresh aloe vera was blended into soothing balms for the skin.

What struck me most wasn’t just how effective these products were—it was how beautiful the experience felt. There was something deeply satisfying about creating something nourishing and natural with our own hands, using ingredients that might otherwise have been discarded.

So much of modern consumer culture revolves around buying products in plastic containers, filled with ingredients we often can’t pronounce. In contrast, this workshop felt simple, grounded, and surprisingly luxurious.

And perhaps that’s where real change begins—not by lecturing people about sustainability, but by creating experiences that make alternative choices feel joyful and abundant.

When you feel how nourishing these simple creations can be, it becomes much harder to go back to the old way of doing things.
