The Ocean Is Trying to Tell Us Something

Living on the edge of the Caribbean Sea is a gift that brings beauty every single day. But it also brings a constant reminder that the ocean is changing.

Over the past few years, enormous blooms of sargassum seaweed have begun arriving along the coast. Some days the sea looks almost normal. Other days, massive waves of seaweed cover the shoreline and stretch far out into the water.

The smell can be overwhelming as the seaweed decomposes. The water becomes harder for marine life to navigate. Patches of sargassum drift across coral reefs, blocking sunlight and suffocating the ecosystems beneath.

Standing on the beach during these moments, it’s impossible not to feel that the ocean itself is trying to send us a message.

Scientists point to many possible causes—warming waters, changing ocean currents, nutrient runoff from agriculture thousands of miles away. Whatever the causes, the message feels clear: the health of our oceans is deeply connected to the choices humans are making across the planet.

Living here has changed the way I see the ocean. It’s not just a beautiful landscape. It’s a living system that sustains life on Earth.

And when that system begins to struggle, it’s not something we can afford to ignore.
